We recently published a fact sheet based on a 2 year study growing bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) trees in 5 different 2.5-3.9 gallon containers. RootSmart-produced seedlings were potted up into these containers and then grown for 2 seasons before a subset were analyzed for root system quality, including: root circling, matting, and other deflections, as well as characterizing first order lateral and main structural roots. |

The Greening the Landscape team is excited to be at the 2020 Virtual IPPS North American Summit! Our very own Dr. Darby McGrath presented at today’s Eastern Region Annual General Meeting, sharing research findings on the effects of air-pruning “levels” on tree root systems in propagation and in the field. Check out the Root Research page for additional updates, as well as the Growing in RootSmart Guide for some helpful tips and tricks to support the management of RootSmart within your operation. We are pleased to share the State of the Industry Report on Soil Management for Ontario Field Tree Nursery Producers! The report follows our recent Soil Management Survey for Nursery Growers and outlines the range of soil management practices implemented by growers throughout the province, identifying areas of interest where our research may contribute toward advancing soil health and management for tree production. Special thanks to Landscape Ontario, Walker Industries and our five nursery partners: Connon Nurseries, Hillen Nursery, Kobes Nurseries, NVK Nurseries and Winkelmolen Nursery for their openness, patience and guidance in developing and producing this research. |

Check out our latest publication in Urban Forestry and Urban Greening. This paper comes out of 6 years of data collection on our study sites located just off the 406 near Brock University. Highway roadside landscapes can be used to increase urban canopy cover by way of tree planting and successful tree establishment. Soil compaction and topsoil removal resulting from construction activities along roadside sites contributes toward extensive and prolonged transplant stress; limiting the survival and effective establishment of planted trees. Findings pertaining to individual tree and soil level impacts support the incorporation of moderate volumes of stabilized, high quality organic amendment prior to planting as an effective method for providing immediate and sustained improvements to bulk density and soil organic matter. |

Get some insight into our work at Vineland Research & Innovation Centre by checking out our latest video series on the Apple RootSmart Pilot Trial! This series is a collection of four video presentations given by the Greening the Landscape team centered on the results of a pilot trial designed to evaluate the production value of the RootSmart air pruning tray within the context of Vineland's Apple Breeding Program. This trial is a prime example of our collaborative approach toward research and innovation at Vineland and highlights the collective work of Vineland’s greenhouse, farm and research teams. We are extremely pleased to announce the release of the Ontario Landscape Tree Planting Guide. The Guide is a comprehensive document which draws on years of research work conducted on tree planting and establishment and, notably, on the many findings from our Greening research program. The Guide’s chapter format provides detailed instructions and a thorough rationale of each of the major factors to be taken into consideration to ensure successful tree planting results. A series of corresponding field sheets distill this information into actionable items. Throughout, the Guide provides additional relevant information by referencing key research findings through hyperlinks. Development of a new industry reference manual is a significant undertaking that requires considerable industry input and support, and we extend our sincere gratitude to the committee and Landscape Ontario for providing the seed funding for the development of this guide. |
