Insects and Diseases

Not recommended due to susceptibility to Dutch Elm Disease, unless using a cultivar. Ulmus americana "Valley Forge" has been observed to be the most tolerant to Dutch Elm Disease but it is not totally immune. Other cultivars have been developed that show moderate to excellent resistance to Dutch Elm Disease. Cultivars have also been developed that are resistant to Phloem Necrosis and Elm Leaf Beetle.

Management Notes

  • Susceptible to storm breakage
  • Large buttress roots may heave sidewalks
